Common Questions

What is Psychotherapy? Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based therapy and is intended to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. Registered Psychotherapists work with individuals, couples and families in individual and group settings. Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) or Registered Psychotherapist Qualifying (RP Qualifying) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning. Individuals usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviours that are adversely affecting their day-to-day lives, relationships and the ability to enjoy life.

Is Psychotherapy covered by OHIP? No, unfortunately it is not. There are some insurance companies that cover sessions – check with your provider. Now that psychotherapy has a provincial college body known as the “College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario” (CRPO) it is hoped that we will be recognized by more insurance companies in the near future.

What are some of the benefits of psychotherapy?

  • A safe place to express your thoughts and feelings.
  • A place to learn how to reduce stress.
  • To be heard, acknowledged and accepted.
  • Re-framing experiences.
  • Exploring why you are feeling what you are feeling with a new perspective.
  • To discuss unresolved issues.
  • To learn about your limiting beliefs, fears and unhealthy patterns.
  • Through self-exploration gain confidence, acceptance, self-love, clarity and practical tools.

Are there disadvantages to Psychotherapy?

  • Psychotherapy is not an exact science. People respond differently. Expectations vary. There are no guarantees of specific outcomes, though research indicates that therapy can be helpful to bring about positive change.
  • Most insurance policies do not cover psychotherapy.
  • Psychotherapy may take longer than drug therapy to produce changes in some situations.
  • Psychotherapy fees can be expensive.
  • Therapists may not be available in crisis situations. Call 911 if you require immediate assistance.
  • The psychotherapy process may be uncomfortable as the client reveals their challenges/history etc.

Are you certified with a provincial body of Psychotherapy? Yes. I am registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) with the designation of Registered Psychotherapist.

How do I pick a Psychotherapist? Select a psychotherapist whose philosophy and approach matches your own. Prepare a list of questions of the basic qualities that are important to you in a therapist and ask them in the consultation. It can be a good idea to work with someone who has been recommended to you, but follow your own intuition when it comes to deciding. These days there is always the option of googling someone to learn more about them.

Have you ever had Psychotherapy? Yes, it served me through difficult experiences and was required as a student of psychotherapy. When I was much younger I used to think psychotherapy was only for people who were really struggling. Now I believe everyone would be wise to attend some type of therapy because it enhances our understanding of our-self and others. Some clients attend on a regular basis while others as they need support. The people I have worked with in groups and one-on-one are some of the strongest and most courageous people I know.

Is Psychotherapy confidential? Yes. The laws protect privacy of communication between client and therapist. There are a few exceptions that will be explained during the consultation or our first session.
